It feels like what a tech startup guy would call a "Minimum Viable Product". I didn't have any crashes when I messed around with it, but I had a a few roadblocks/workarounds/OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE THATS HOW ITS SUPPOSED TO WORK moments. I was told that the new generation (V3 i think?) thin clients from Siemens have a new enough browser to work fine, but I'm sure plenty of others would work (just needs a modern browser). Every client is a web browser (HTML5), even on the server. THERE IS NO MIGRATION FORWARD from the older products, you'd have to re-engineer everything from scratch. It sounds like Unified starts pretty much from scratch with a whole new everything. WinCC Comfort and Advanced are based on the older HMIs in Flex and I think Protool before that. Over the years, Siemens has added new features to WInCC as it made sense, like WebUX, but it always was the same backend.

It is essentially the WinCC runtime, but with Portal engineering instead of the WinCC Explorer.

WinCC Professional is based on the WinCC product that Siemens has had forever and is now at v7.something. Unified is a completely different platform from the HMIs that came before. If this is the first one for that customer, it might be worth asking a Siemens engineer (not the sales guy) if it has the features you need, but be prepared for surprise limitations in addition to new features.
